General Apprenticeship Information

Job Description – Apprentices will layout, assemble, install and hook up all electrical apparatus, equipment, fixtures and wiring used in electrical systems on maintenance, renovation and new construction projects. Possible installation, connecting, and troubleshooting of electrical machinery, control devices, industrial equipment, and signal communications systems.

Employers – Electrical contractors affiliated with I.B.E.W. Local 379. Contractors are not necessarily based in the Charlotte area. 

Working Conditions – Physical strength and agility are an absolute necessity for the kinds of work that are performed. You must be willing to work in all types of weather as much of the work is performed outdoors.

Jurisdiction – Reliable transportation is an absolute necessity. Local 379’s jurisdiction covers most of northwest North Carolina and Greenville, South Carolina. There is no travel compensation within Local 379’s jurisdiction.

Training – Length of apprenticeship is  four years, depending on the program. On-the-job training is provided through the Electrical Contractors. Classroom instruction is provided approximately one day a week (1pm to 6pm) and some Saturday's.

Wages – The rate of pay for apprentices is determined by the collective bargaining agreement between  I.B.E.W. Local 379 and the Contractors. Apprentice pay is based on a predetermined percentage of the journeyman’s pay rate.

Fringe Benefits – There is a Health and Welfare plan which your employer contributes to, on your behalf. After a probationary period, there is a Pension program that is also contributed to, on your behalf, by the employer. There are no paid holidays, sick days, vacations, etc… When you work, you get paid. When you don’t work, you are not paid.

Competition – During a given selection period, we receive in excess of 100 applications.  Offers of apprenticeship are based upon meeting qualifications and industry demand.

Cost – You are required to purchase your own work clotheswork shoes, textbooks, workbooks and tools.
